Yow! Paper wasps are better than the huge, buzzing, whatever those are though...
My main problem is beestings, I got one on each hand in the same day once, I couldn't draw for weeks
Also, that sucks about the bees... I've found that if you don't freak out when they're near you don't get stung, though that is coming from someone that's only a little allergic
I've always called them hornets- but I believe you're talking about these little critters, Abispa ephippium. I've never been bitten by one though!

And B. being too friendly with them and trying to pick them up with twigs if I find one on the path
